A brand new ophthalmology clinic is opening soon at St. Martha's Regional Hospital. The area directly outside the clinic is waiting for an artistic touch and a mural to welcome patients. Art incorporating ophthalmology is encouraged. For your mural submission, please include:

Antigonight: Call for Submissions
Antigonight: Art After Dark Festival is a free arts festival that aims to be inclusive and accessible to all persons. This year, the festival runs from September 4th-18th in Antigonish, L'nuewa'ki (Mi’kma’ki)/Nova Scotia.
We are inviting artists from anywhere in the world who have roots in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada to create experimental new works for the festival, including but not limited to: video, performance, dance, sound, sculpture, and installation, which can be presented online or in-person in the town of Antigonish.
Participating Antigonight artists will receive CARFAC-mandated artist fees in payment for their work. We strongly encourage members of LGBTQIA2+ communities, non-White communities, newcomers, and persons with disabilities to apply.
Our 2021 curator in residence, Jessica Mensch, has chosen the theme of “connection” for this year’s festival. We seek proposals that transform the way we think about our relationships and connections to one another, as well as to the non-human world; works that re-evaluate social hierarchies and our priorities within them. This may take the form of speculative storytelling: works that envision a world you haven’t seen before.
White scholar and activist Donna Haraway wrote in “Staying with the Trouble” that perhaps there is a better way of framing and being in the world we share not just with other humans but with our animal kin. She writes: “It matters what stories make worlds, what worlds make stories…Like all offspring of colonizing and imperial histories, I – we – have to relearn how to conjugate worlds with partial connections and not universals and particulars…”
In other words, we’re calling on you to offer us your own radical experiments or vision of what sustainable transformation looks like.

2021 ACA Artist Survey
At Antigonish Culture Alive, we see the impact of COVID-19 on our local arts community, and we want to do all that we can to help.
We would like to focus on best serving you, the artists and arts organizations, and right now the best way you can help us, help you is by sharing the impact of COVID-19 on your creative endeavours.
We are compiling this information so we can become better informed on how COVID-19 is impacting the Antigonish arts community. By organizing this data into evidence, then we will be better able to advocate and send this information to Arts Nova Scotia and the provincial government. Your statements would also help to inform us of specific grants, submissions, employment or other opportunities that may be applicable to your practice or organization.
The information you provide us will be kept strictly confidential and is essential for enabling ACA to properly advocate for creatives during this difficult time. Whether it is for a small gig, an exhibition, sale or a large production, we want to learn the financial consequences of COVID-19 on the arts community in Antigonish.

Are you a senior living in the community? Would you enjoy a little fun and friendship with other seniors, singing, dancing, creating? Art Larks! is for you! Led by artists from across NS (and beyond, with NS connections), Art Larks! seeks to bring seniors together for music, visual arts, poetry, dance, story and laughter. Under 65 but like to join us? We won't turn you away!
Beginning June 6, free, virtual programs, both live and pre-recorded, will be available for seniors living in the community. Although created for Antigonish seniors (or those with a connection to this area), we will welcome seniors from across the province and farther afield. Registration is required to access the programs. Once registered, we'll share the links with you.

Congratulations to Shelly Thompson on the premier of
Dawn, Her Dad and the Tractor at the Inside Out Film Festival in Toronto!
When a young woman with a startling resemblance to her mother arrives home for her mother’s funeral, one family begins an odyssey toward understanding.
Dawn returns home to Nova Scotia to mourn the death of her mother and repair the estrangement with her father, John Andrew. An ancient tractor becomes the focus for the mechanically-minded Dawn, but her father’s long-simmering resentments heighten tensions. Watching his daughter work to restore the tractor, he realises that reclaiming this relationship depends on his own coming out: supporting Dawn publicly and fighting malicious small-town transphobia.
Shelley Thompson’s feature directorial debut follows a father and daughter as they cautiously rebuild their relationship and come to understand the mechanics of the heart.

Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia ~ Call for Proposals: Anti-Opression Workshop Facilitator
This past summer, the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) issued a Statement of Solidarity with equity-seeking communities and all people who are engaged in the crucial and difficult work of both confronting and overcoming racism and injustice.
In this context, the WFNS is seeking a facilitator to deliver an anti-oppression training workshop to its members who offer presentations and workshops through WFNS’s Writers In The Schools (WITS) program.
Through WITS, visiting Nova Scotia writers provide presentations, workshops, and readings for students of every grade. The program encourages students’ enjoyment of reading and writing and engages them in the development of literacy skills. WITS is our most public educational outreach program, investing more than one quarter of our resources and much of our organizational energies.
The facilitator would deliver a two-hour interactive workshop in September 2021 to WITS writers via Zoom. This workshop would be repeated two to three times that month, depending on the number of participants and the maximum number for effective sessions, which will be determined in consultation with the facilitator. Approximately 40 to 60 WITS writers are expected to participate.
The facilitator must have experience delivering anti-oppression training and working on equity and diversity and inclusion initiatives. Providing practical advice pertaining to visiting school-aged children is expected.
How to submit a proposal: Please send your CV; a 100- to 150-word description of the type of workshop you propose to deliver; several references; and your proposed rate of pay for workshop development and delivery to Executive Director Marilyn Smulders at director@writers.ns.ca

Visual Arts Nova Scotia: Survey
Have 15 minutes? Are you an artist, of any discipline, living in Nova Scotia? If yes, we want to hear from you!
Calling all dancers, visual artists, filmmakers, writers, theatre performers, craft artists, musicians, and all other creative workers living in this province. Visual Arts Nova Scotia has launched the Artists in Mind survey to better understand the mental health experiences of artists. The information gathered in this survey will inform a report to the provincial government outlining the mental health care needs of artists. Your feedback will also help us recommend mental health pilot programs, and identify organizations that can offer artist-specific mental health supports.
Your responses to this survey will be anonymous unless you would like to be contacted for follow up research, or to enter the draw for one of our fabulous prizes (to be announced soon)!

Sparks is a mentee of renowned wood carver Ned Bear and has carried Bear's legacy into his own work, finding his own unique form. Sparks' work is created through a rich process of building relationships with elders throughout Mi'kma'ki searching with them for trees to source his wood respectfully, thereby forming a relationship with community, land, and his material. His mask carving is an act of bringing forth stories within the wood to share generously with the world. Further programming in conjunction with this exhibition will be announced soon. We are so thrilled to be able to reopen to the public with this highly anticipated show. ⠀

2021 Angus F. Macgillivray Art Bursary Winners
The StFX Art Gallery is pleased to present its newest online exhibition, featuring art by the 2021 Angus F. Macgillivray Art Bursary winners. Each year, students in the StFX Art Department submit portfolios that are reviewed by a three-member jury. The jury selects the bursary recipients based on the calibre of their studio production and their demonstration of promise in art.
This year’s winners are Sydney Haws, Britt Pigat, and Mila Walst.

Magnetic North: Imagining Canada in Painting 1910–1940
Starting Thursday, March 11, works by the Group of Seven, as well as Emily Carr, Tom Thomson and films by Indigenous artists Lisa Jackson and Caroline Monnet among other contemporary artists, will be on view at the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT, Germany, as part of the exhibition Magnetic North: Imagining Canada in Painting 1910–1940. Co-organized by the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, the AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario, and the National Gallery of Canada, the exhibition brings together 87 paintings and five films from several Canadian collections and institutions, and will subsequently be hosted by theKunsthal Rotterdam in fall 2021

The Marketing, Communications, and Event Manager reports to the Executive Director. This position is a full-time, permanent position, with the intention of starting as soon as possible. Fee is commensurate with experience.
Job Description
Communications: Responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy for both internal and external communications that is in keeping with the organization’s mandate, brand and policies.
Marketing: Responsible for developing a long-term marketing strategy for the Association and cohesive marketing campaigns for individual Association activities and projects that are keeping with the organization’s mandate, brand and policies.
Event Management: Responsible for the management of all MNS events including Nova Scotia Music Week (NSMW) and international conferences and showcases.

New Support for Workers in the Live Arts and Music Sectors Fund
On March 2, 2021, the Honourable Steven Guilbault, Minister of Canadian Heritage, in collaboration with Simon Brault, CEO for the Canada Council for the Arts, announced details of the implementation of $181.5 million in new funding for the live arts and music sectors for 2021-2022. These funds were first announced on November 30, 2020, as part of the 2020 Fall Economic Statement.
This new funding will support the planning and presentation of COVID-19 safe events in the arts and music sectors – including both live and digital – and provide work opportunities in these sectors. It includes the one-year renewal of an additional $25 million initially provided in Budget 2019 to help stabilize the overall environment for the arts and music sectors through the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program ($7 million), the Canada Arts Presentation Fund ($8 million) and the Canada Music Fund ($10 million).
The Department of Canadian Heritage will deliver $40 million in new funding to stimulate short-term contracting of workers in the live events sector, through the Support for Workers in the Live Arts and Music Sectors Fund.
For its part, the Canada Council for the Arts will distribute $116.5 million, as follows:
- $50.5 million in new funding for a new digital innovation initiative (Digital Now), to enable arts groups, collectives and organizations to adapt or create works to be shared with virtual audiences
- $66 million in new funding to stimulate increased research, creation and production of new work through the Explore and Create program
Objectives
The Support for Workers in Live Arts and Music Sectors Fund aims to:
- support the arts and music cultural sectors in immediately contracting and employing artists and cultural workers, as part of the federal government’s overall efforts to help Canadians and Canadian businesses weather the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
- provide arts and cultural experiences, both live and digital to Canadians, while restrictions on gatherings and travel continue across the country
Programs delivering the Support for Workers in the Live Arts and Music Sectors Fund:
- Building Communities through Arts and Heritage - Local Festivals component ($5 million)
- Canada Arts Presentation Fund ($20 million)
- Canada Music Fund ($15 million)
We are pleased to inform you that BCAH and CAPF are ready to accept funding applications under the new Support for Workers in Live Arts and Music Sector Fund. You are invited to read the details about how to access this funding opportunity here.
Please note that there is no deadline to apply for the Fund through the BCAH - Local Festivals component and the CAPF. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis for projects to be carried out between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022. Funding will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, until all funds are disbursed. We encourage organizations to apply before October 15, 2021, to ensure that the Department has sufficient time to assess their applications and that organizations have enough time to carry out their activities prior to March 31, 2022.
Important: the Department reserves the right to apply its discretionary judgment to ensure a diversity of projects that reflect the many perspectives of Canada’s cultural life. This includes ensuring that priority groups such as Indigenous, racialized, LGBTQ2, people who are deaf and/or living with disabilities, are provided equitable access to this Fund.

The Arts NS Establish Artist Recognition Award
Know an artist who deserves recognition? The Arts NS Established Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists who have emerged from their initial training and development to become recognized, established artists in Nova Scotia. The awards help showcase the recipients’ work to residents of the province and to people beyond our borders. This visibility will encourage artistic and economic well-being for the recipients and contribute to the health of Nova Scotia’s artistic sector in support of a well-rounded community.

Awesome Antigonish is working to help move the awesomeness forward in Antigonish Town and County. They will offer $1000 cash to a successful applicant for an idea deemed awesome by our board of trustees (Note: they reserve the right to not award the grant, split the grant or miss a month). The Awesome Antigonish trustees meet on the third Wednesday of each month at the board room of AA Munro at 219 Main St. Antigonish in the Kirk Building at 7pm. That is also when they invite the top three applicants to join us to present their idea in person. All applications are ideally submitted by the second Wednesday of the month to be voted on by trustees before the following weeks meeting. Finalist will be contacted via email to let them know to come and present in person. NSCAD: The Institute for the Study of Canadian Slavery
NSCAD University’s Institute for the Study of Canadian Slavery (‘The Institute’) has issued calls for applications from artists-in-residence and graduate student fellows.
The successful candidates will work with the Institute to conceptualize and produce work that supports its vision and mandate. These fellowships are open to practicing professional artists of African descent who identify as Black and live in Nova Scotia. Emerging, mid-career, and established artists working in various genres, media, and art forms are welcome to apply including (but not limited to): conceptual artists, craft artists, film makers, land artists, painters, performance artists, photographers, sculptors, and textile artists. These fellowships are not for traditional writers like novelists, poets, or playwrights. Applicants must demonstrate that their artwork engages with at least one of the Institute mandate areas. Furthermore, the artwork must adopt an anti-colonial, de-colonial, post-colonial and/or anti-racist methodology/approach which challenges the nature of European and Euro-American imperialism and colonialism, and interrogates the racist logic of the institution of Transatlantic Slavery.
Each artist-in-residence fellowship will last one academic semester in the 2021-2022 academic year from either: 1) September 1st to December 17th, 2021 or (2) January 3rd, to April 29th, 2022.
Each fellowship is worth $10,000.00 Canadian Dollars.

Mulgrave Road Theatre: Call for submissions to our Interval Writer's Retreat

Mulgrave Road Theatre, based in the Eskikewa’kik District of Mi’kmaki, is seeking two writers/creators who identify as Indigenous, Black or Person of Color. We are hoping to support your creativity and your story – oral or written – within the realm of live performance. Preference will be given to stories that reflect rural life.
We are offering up to two weeks of private accommodation in the Guysborough area and a $600 weekly honorarium. You will also be given access to a small performance space if that is conducive to your process; as well as access to office supplies and equipment. We will assist with travel expenses to and from Guysborough. Please note that your stay will be more comfortable if you have access to your own vehicle.
Following the two weeks there will be a discussion with the Artistic Director to determine future development, if suitable to both parties.
First session: June 28 – July 11. Second session: July 12-25.
Deadline for applications: 5:00pm, Saturday, June 12
If you are selected in the first round, we will ask you to take part in a phone call or Zoom chat with our Artistic Director to discuss your application; consultation to take place on or before June 15.
You are eligible if you:

- Are creating performance-based work.

The new Institute for the Study of Canadian Slavery (The Institute) at NSCAD University, under the directorship of Dr. Charmaine A. Nelson is proud to issue its first call for proposals to Graduate Student Fellowships and Artist-in-Residence Fellowships.

2022 Canadian Folk Music Awards Submissions Now Open
(Submissions are now open for the 17th edition of the Canadian Folk Music Awards. The 2022 CFMAs will take place the weekend of April 1-3, 2022, in Charlottetown, PEI. Again for 2022, the CFMAs are pleased to announce reduced submission fees (a reduction of $10-$15 per category!).
CFMA is looking forward to heading to Charlottetown, PEI for the 2022 Awards Weekend. This weekend will capture the true heart of the folk community, while celebrating the 2022 nominees and the category recipients.
Submissions are open NOW, and due to the Covid-19 situation, CFMA have decided for this year to again reduce the submission fees for CFMA 2022. Instead of $70 for the first category submission and $60 for each subsequent category, pricing will be $50 per category during the Early Bird period, and $55 per category until submission deadline.

During Fall 2020, Prismatic Arts Festival and Neptune Theatre will be offering artists in Nova Scotia free access to rehearsal studios, particularly Indigenous artists and artists of colour. Artists and groups can use the space for any arts-related activities, such as rehearsals, choreography, compositions, recording, photography, and more. For the time they are booked, artists have exclusive access to the space. Open Spaces provides rehearsal rooms only, and unfortunately cannot offer performance space at this time. Due to COVID-19, neither the public nor live audiences are allowed in the space. To apply to use the space, please fill in these questions with information you can share.

I have a B.Ed. from St. Thomas University and 15 years of experience as a performing and recording artist.
